Half day or full day preschool in Singapore: which hours fit your family?
Published 4 November 2026 · Last checked November 2026
In Singapore, many childcare centres offer a full day from about 7am to 7pm on weekdays, while a half day covers a morning or an afternoon (ECDA). Kindergartens usually run a shorter teaching day: MOE Kindergartens run a four-hour programme today. MOE will pilot a 7am to 7pm full-day model, with a 7am to 12.30pm half-day option, at two MOE Kindergartens in 2027 and roll it out to all of them from 2028 to 2030. To choose, start with who can collect your child and when. Then compare each centre's timetable in writing.

What do half day and full day mean in Singapore?
Childcare centres: many advertise full-day weekday hours of about 7am to 7pm. Some also offer a morning or afternoon half day. Exact hours differ by centre.
Kindergartens usually run shorter teaching sessions in the morning or afternoon. Some offer extra care outside those hours.
MOE Kindergartens run a four-hour programme for K1 and K2, for children aged five to six. Families who need a longer day can use Kindergarten Care, or KCare, where it is offered. An MOE-appointed provider covers the hours outside the four-hour MK programme. In the school holidays, KCare runs from 7am to 7pm (MOE).
For how a kindergarten licence differs from a childcare licence, see our guide to preschool ages in Singapore.
What is changing at MOE Kindergartens from 2027 to 2030?
On 28 October 2026, MOE announced a full-day model for its kindergartens. MK@Rivervale and MK@West View will pilot it in 2027. In the same announcement, MOE said it plans to extend the model to all MOE Kindergartens between 2028 and 2030.
Full-day MOE Kindergartens will open from 7am to 7pm on weekdays in school terms and school holidays. They will close on gazetted public holidays, MOE-designated school holidays and centre closure days. Families who don't need a full day can choose a half-day programme from 7am to 12.30pm. Each March, at the start of MK registration, MOE will list the kindergartens moving the following year. The details are in MOE's announcement.
For a 2028 start, check the list MOE publishes when MK registration opens in March 2027. A kindergarten may not be able to confirm its future model before then.
Half day or full day preschool in Singapore: how the options compare
| Option | Typical weekday hours | School holidays | Often suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kindergarten session | A shorter session, morning or afternoon | Many follow the school terms | A parent or grandparent free from late morning |
| MOE Kindergarten with KCare (today) | Four-hour MK programme with KCare covering the remaining care hours, subject to the centre's session arrangement | KCare runs 7am to 7pm | K1 and K2 families who need a full day |
| MOE Kindergarten, full-day model (pilot 2027, all MKs planned 2028 to 2030) | 7am to 7pm. Half day: 7am to 12.30pm | Open, excluding gazetted public holidays, MOE-designated school holidays and centre closure days | K1 and K2 families who want the whole day in the same kindergarten |
| Childcare centre, half day | A morning or an afternoon. Times differ by centre | Ask each centre | A helper, grandparent or parent at home for the other half |
| Childcare centre, full day | Many advertise about 7am to 7pm | Ask each centre | Two working parents with no one free before evening |
| A core day with an afternoon extension | A set core day, plus extra hours you add if you need them | Ask each centre | Families who need more than a morning but not every afternoon |
Ask each centre for its own timetable in writing.
Which hours fit your week?
You work full days and no one else can collect. Work out the earliest time you could reach the centre on a day when a meeting runs late. If nobody can collect before evening, compare full-day childcare with MK plus KCare. From 2027, the new MOE full-day model will also be available at selected MKs. A core day with an extension may work if its pickup time covers your commute.
You work from home or part-time. A half day can work if your calls finish by lunch. A midday pickup splits your working day in two. A day that runs into the afternoon gives you one longer block.
A grandparent or helper collects. A half day can work. Ask whether lunch comes before pickup and how the centre records the adults you've named to collect your child.
Someone is at home in the afternoon. A kindergarten session or a half day may fit, as long as that person can do the pickup and the afternoon care.
Your child's age matters as well. A two-year-old who still naps after lunch has a different day from a five-year-old who doesn't. Ask the teachers how children of your child's age spend the afternoon and where they rest.
Time the trip from home or work at pickup hour on a weekday. A map shows how close a centre is, not how long the trip takes at 6pm.
What happens in the afternoon?
In some centres the main lessons happen in the morning and the afternoon is rest and free play. In others, teachers run lessons or projects after lunch too.
Ask what your child would do between lunch and pickup, who leads it and whether the morning teachers stay.
Questions to ask about hours on a visit
- What time can my child arrive, what is the latest pickup and what happens if I am running late?
- Are the centre's opening hours the same as the hours my child's programme covers?
- Is lunch included on a half day? Where does my child rest?
- Is the afternoon a separate charge? Can we add or drop it later in the year?
- Which days does the centre close? Is it open in the school holidays?
- What happens in the afternoon and who teaches it?
- Can I have the timetable and the fees in writing?
